Revolutionizing Urban Reading Culture: Taicang Readzone Bookstore

Cheng Yu Hsieh's Award-Winning Design Transforms Traditional Reading Spaces

Cheng Yu Hsieh's innovative design for the Taicang Readzone Bookstore, a 368-square-meter space located in a department store, has revolutionized the concept of urban reading culture. The design, which won the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2022, introduces a fresh consumption pattern and life scenery, creating a micro cultural center in the city.

The bookstore's unique design is inspired by the city's daily life and culture. It takes the form of a circular theater, attracting citizens of different backgrounds, ages, and reading demands. The walls of books and multi-directional door frames resemble concentrated urban street scenes, inviting readers to explore and travel. This design not only accommodates individual readers but also caters to parent-child reading and working meetings.

Cheng Yu Hsieh's design stands out for its multiplex functionality. By rearranging cabinets, tables, and chairs, the space can host literary salons and cultural exchanges, creating a high-range experience for its customers. This feature, combined with the surrounding coffees and reading products, provides a multiplex type for the customer's commodity.

The realization of this design was achieved by focusing on the circular theater form and introducing human flow interaction and brand topics. The design's motion trend diffuses outward in circular and radial patterns, connecting official business, relaxation, and other abundant reading scenarios. This ingenious solution to the problems in construction site configuration promotes a sense of compatible and friendly reading and enhances brand recognition.

In terms of design research, the semi-circular base features were taken into consideration. The stainless steel ceiling tactfully eliminates the oppressing sensation from the huge construction body, symbolizing the origin of human knowledge in the vast universe. The clear guidelines and complete lighting environment assist readers in quickly searching for target books, thus improving the reading comfort level.

Despite the challenges of trans-regional cooperation and the impact of the epidemic on the project execution schedule, Cheng Yu Hsieh and his team successfully completed the project between March and June 2021. The Taicang Readzone Bookstore is a testament to their dedication and commitment to transforming traditional reading spaces into vibrant cultural centers.

The Taicang Readzone Bookstore's design is a testament to Cheng Yu Hsieh's innovative approach to interior design. It's not just a bookstore, but a micro cultural center in the city, redefining the urban reading culture. With its unique design and multiplex functionality, the bookstore invites readers to explore and discover, making reading a more engaging and enjoyable experience.
